Am I ready for editing?
If you have a completed manuscript, you’re ready for either content editing, copyediting or proofreading. If your manuscript isn’t complete, you may not be ready for editing services yet. However, if you have writer’s block, can’t find the hole in your plot, have flat characters, a dull setting, etc., you may want to consider contacting our content coach.
If I’m ready for the next step, how does this process work?
Fill out the Contact Us form, and the appropriate editor, based on the service you selected, will contact you for additional details and to outline the next steps. After a fee and timetable have been agreed upon, you’ll receive a contract for e-signature and an invoice for the first half of payment, if applicable. Your manuscript should be emailed to Rare Birds as an attachment on or before the designated start date in standard industry format (double-space, 1” margins, 12-point type, standard font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier). Your manuscript will be edited in MS Word with the track changes function and returned to you by the agreed upon date.
How is your pricing determined?
The industry standard stipulates that 250 words make a page. A good editor can edit at most 10-12 pages per hour. So for an 80k word novel, just one round of editing takes about 30 hours. For manuscripts with more errors, this time increases. Our pricing tiers ensure that we are compensated fairly according to the amount of hours worked on your manuscript, and this system also rewards you for putting in extra work on self editing. For more information on standard editing rates, visit the rates page from the Editorial Freelancers Association.
Do you offer discounts?
We do have an referral incentive program that benefits both your and your friends. Introduce us to a new friend and we'll give them a $10 discount. Plus, we'll give you a one-time 10% discount on your next project if a referral client hires Rare Bird Editing. Be sure your friend gives us your name when contacting us.
Do you edit non-fiction?
We are better suited to editing fiction, but we accept creative or narrative non-fiction, such as memoir, on a limited, case-by-case basis. We suggest the Editorial Freelancers Association for locating a non-fiction editor.
What happens if I don’t send my manuscript by the agreed upon date?
Late arrival of manuscripts to Rare Bird Editing will result in late delivery of completed project by the same number of days. In cases of a significant delay, we reserve the right to postpone or decline the project if the editorial calendar is full.
What if I don’t receive my completed project from Rare Bird Editing by the agreed upon date?
Late delivery of a completed project to the author will result in the forfeiture of 10% of the agreed upon fee by Rare Bird Editing, unless the amount of work needed is found to be significantly greater than thought when discussing terms. If that is the case, Rare Bird Editing will contact you before the due date to discuss options.
Can I request a rush job?
You certainly can, but expect to pay a higher price rate. After submitting your request, our editors will check their calendars to see if they are able to accommodate your requested timeline. If so, they will accept your rushed project.
Is there a contract?
Yes, there is a standard editing contact, which you can sign using Abode eSign.
How do I pay?
Invoicing and payment are handled through PayPal. For proofreading, payment is due upon completion. For content editing and copyediting, half is due before beginning work, and half at the time of completion.
What if I have questions after I receive my edits?
Our editors remain available to answer questions about grammar, edits, feedback, or other facets of the project for 48 hours after the work is completed.
Can I cancel my project?
Yes, you can cancel the project at any time. An invoice will be sent for the percentage of work completed up to that point.
